Shell Access to MySQL Under MAMP

I needed to do some work on a MySQL instance at my old position, but hadn’t yet set up my new MacBook with a development environment yet. Waffling between installing everything myself and running MAMP, I checked to see if I could access the MAMP MySQL instance from the shell, and came across a blog post from 2009 that explained one satisfactory way to do it. My system had two differences, though: 1) I didn’t seem to have a .profile file, but rather a .bash_profile file and 2) my .bash_profile file had already been altered by my Python installation process. For now, I’m going to leave the PATH change only in my bash profile, knowing that I’ll have to alter /etc/paths if I want to change it for everything later.
