Camaro Rock: The First Cut

WTF?

There are songs I remember from childhood that turned me on to rock and roll, songs that my parents didn’t have and would not have been caught dead listening to, but which the older kids liked. For example, one of my earliest memories is of being in second grade (so I don’t have a good memory. So sue me.) on the diving board at the Officer’s Club pool and hearing Foreigner over the PA. Likewise being at the Officer’s beach (Dad was a Marine) playing pinball and eating cheap hot dogs and hearing Bad Company. The year was 1979 and there was a style to the music that I couldn’t label until recently, and that label is Camaro Rock. Over there, in no specific order, is my first list of songs that I’m going to burn on a CD for my listening pleasure. Comments are welcome, but there are a few guidelines:

  1. Song has to have been released between 1976 and 1980, inclusive.
  2. Unless the song appeared on a greatest hits compilation that appeared between those dates. (Or unless there is a highly compelling reason to include it, like “School’s Out”)
  3. I’m trying to avoid the biggest of the big hits, but clearly there are exceptions.
  4. I’m trying to avoid having more than one song per group, but there are exceptions to that also.
  5. If the song is about drinkin’, girls, or being in a rock ’n’ roll band, so much the better.
