Blog review: k-t-h-x-b-YE

I joined a peer-to-peer review project, and was assigned to review this blog. Here's my review:

Overall impression: This blog made me feel really really old. This is a blog for folks who play video games. And who also spend time playing video games. And maybe play some more video games after that.

Layout: Given the topic, suprisingly legible. A three-column set-up, colors that aren't obnoxious. The logo banner rotates randomly (just like mine!). Each of the contributors has their own logo / avatar / picture, which I really like, b/c you can see who's posting at a glance. They use a off-site forum for comments, which is OK but you can't see from the main blog what's been commented on already.

Content: Well, I couldn't access the archives, so I'll have to go on what's up this week, and what I remembered from the first time I looked at it. This week there are reviews of the latest songs for the Dance Dance Revolution game (which kicks ass, BTW); a bug report on the Progress Quest game; a picture of Pokemon figurines having sex; an amusing diatribe on stupid fashion (hey, any reference to Taco gets points in my book); and an attempt to calculate what would happen if everyone in China really did jump at the same time.

Clearly, I am not in the target audience for this blog. I don't even own a console system. I've played DDR once. I like Cowboy Bebop, but my anime knowledge pretty much ends with Akira. The closest I got to playing a MMORPG was Lambda Moo.

But there seem to be a pretty loyal group of people who read this blog, and comment on it, so I'd give props to them for content even if it's not for me. Also credit for original content: zero memes, zero reposts, zero boring-journal entries. They have a very active forum. Lots of trash talk, and if you're sensitive to strong language or racial/ethnic epithets, I suggest staying away. But it's surprisingly homo-friendly (why am I surprised? I suppose because so much of the internet isn't).

Final tally: Not for me, but a good blog.
