After several weeks of Palmlessness, I was beginning to feel like I'd lost a limb. (I was going to extend this metaphor, into "phantom pains" and crutches, but I've just looked up and sitting on the subway across from me is a woman with one arm, so now I just can't.) After much research and waiting I'm now the owner of the Handera 330. I hadn't heard of it before I started looking around -- I was pretty certain I'd buy a Clie or a Palm m130. But the Handera is wicked.

First, it's the same size as my trusty Palm III. While the new m-class Palms are smaller, they also have smaller screens. I like the size and feel of a III. Plus my keyboard will still work.
And the screen? It's great. Really sharp. The best part is that the graffiti area is part of the regular screen. Not using it? It scrolls away. Now reading The Brothers Karamazov won't seem quite so cramped. Oh, and you get visible "ink" when you graffiti, which makes it easier to write with accuracy. Already I'm finding that I'm making fewer mistakes.
Over on the side there's a jog dial, just like a Clie. I spend a lot of time reading on crowded subways so one-handed operation is a must.
Right on top of the dial is a button. Push it and it starts recording a WAV file from a tiny mic. There's a small but loud playback speaker at the bottom. This is no multimedia device -- no headphone jack, no MP3 player -- but I'm ready to make my own Diane tapes. I'll post a clip of Ben later once I fix the card reader up.
But wait! There's more! Right up top there's not one but
The drawbacks? It's not USB, which means longer synch, but I think I'll live. And it's not color. It would be nice to have pix of Ben, but in terms of readability I'll take a good large BW screen over a small kinda-fuzzy color screen. And the price? Well it's about $300 -- the same as the m130 or the comparable Clie. But I parlayed several online deals and got 10% off, plus a free USB card reader, 100 free CD-Rs, 25 free CD-RWs, the 64mb CF card, a couple of CD-ROMS, and the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Heh.
Now I just have to not lose this one.
