Kerry on Defense: An Appeal

I foolishly got into a debate with someone at one of the right-wing blogs I've been frequenting in hopes of getting the skinny on the present wars. Foolishly because, after making a bunch of statements about how Kerry is not going to hurt the military, I realized that I actually don't know the first thing about his voting record or his intentions. The main Kerry website doesn't help, for it only talks about Homeland Defense and completely skirts Iraq and the military. Can anyone point me to good sources on this? Does anyone have any opinions at all on the matter? The right-wingers appear to have more "facts" at their finger tips that I, because of my ignorance, can neither evaluate nor counter.

Why bother finding out what his policies are? They're just going to change in a few minutes anyway.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Not thrilled about our presidential candidate, Mike? He's so going to lose.

I've got a little betting pool going out here. You have to name the Democratic VP, the winner of the 2004 election and the electoral college count of the victor. Must get the first two correct to qualify - college count is the tie-breaker, with closest to the number winning (no "price-is-right" rules).

My entry?

Edwards - Bush - 285.

No cost to enter, and winner gets something cool but trivial, like a HeroClix figure. Feel free to enter and I'll add you to my spreadsheet. No entries once the Veep choice becomes obvious . . .

MS -- why do you think Kerry's gonna lose? Look at the numbers thus far -- Bush is on the ropes in a big way. The race is wide open. Promisingly, Kerry is doing well with swing voters in swing states ...

I realize you were addressing MS, but I'll give my answer to the question (since, at this point, I also think Kerry will lose)

Bush *should* be on the ropes in a big way, but the fact remains that despite all of the disasters that have befallen his image, he's still pretty much right there in the popular vote and, much more importantly, doing even better in the electoral vote.

There are a number of state-by-state electoral college trackers, and they don't seem encouraging. For example, this one shows a tie (today at least), but to get it, Kerry has to win Ohio and Florida - which I'm not so confident about.

Mind you, I think Kerry will win the popular vote this year - but between the relatively small number of states that actually matter and the presence of Nader Nuts in a couple of them, I am still skeptical that Kerry can actually find the electoral votes he needs - even if he does manage to win New York and California by a landslide.

Obviously, I hope I'm wrong. But the betting man in me is not willing to go against the incumbent quite yet.

I think Kerry will get the same response Gore did. As my little-old lady next-door neighbor (from rural Georgia) put it, "he's a know it all, and he's ugly." There you have it. The voice of the people.
George manages to get the "character" vote, and he also gets the "the war in Iraq is a war to defend freedom" vote. And the money vote. So what's left? Blacks, trade union guys, and the Blue-state bourgeoisie.

There are a lot of links in this old post of mine to various sites that track candidates voting records and the like:
