OK, so here's the deal. A company called Gratis Network is offering free iPods to people who sign up for one of about ten free offers. The catch? You have to get five friends to sign up for offers, too. If they get five of their friends to sign up, then they can also get a free iPod.
Yes, it's a pyramid scheme. And, like most pyramid schemes, the people at the top generally make out, while the people at the bottom get screwed. For me to get an iPod, I have to get 5 people to play along. But each of those people have to get 5 people to play, meaning 31 of us have to play along. Then they have to get 125 people to participate... pretty soon, our social network of people runs out.
But we're going to turn that on its head. If you play along, you'll have a 16.7% chance of getting a free 20 Gb iPod!
Here's what we'll do: instead of me getting an iPod, and 5 of you duped into perpetuating the pyramid, we're going to get one iPod for the 6 of us, and draw lots to see who keeps it.
1. Read about the offer at Free iPod Guide to convince yourself this isn't a scam. If you're interested, there's an economic analysis here.
2. Go to the Free iPod site using this referral link. Ignore all the optional surveys. Do not put in anyone else's email addresses in the "Refer a Friend" section.
3. Sign up for one of the offers. (I signed up for the "Real Rhapsody" offer -- it's a 14-day free trial, which I will cancel once I get credit for signing up.)
4. Leave a comment below, telling me that you've done #2 and #3.
Once we hit 5 people, we will close the thread, wait for everything to verify, and then have a drawing to see who gets the iPod.
So, who's in?

Well, I've been known to buy into Powerball syndicates, so this does have some appeal. Even though I've never actually won Powerball. The odds here seem better though.
How are we going to decide what color we want? I like silver and blue best.
Also, if you don't "refer" me, how will it know that I am one of your "targets"?

Comment #2 :: link :: August 11, 2004 11:56 AMemily -- Use this link (also above) and it will know that I sent you.
Comment #3 :: link :: August 11, 2004 12:20 PMOh, I get it. So now we just have to wait for four more victims...er, participants.
Comment #4 :: link :: August 11, 2004 01:09 PMYup! Oh, and to your earlier question, I figured that the 20GB model, rather than the 4GB minis, would render the color choice moot.
Comment #5 :: link :: August 11, 2004 01:44 PMI picked a good day to catch up with Ish, eh?
I'm in.
Comment #6 :: link :: August 11, 2004 03:36 PMD'oh, I had no idea that the capacity difference was so huge. Okay, white is boring, but 20 gigs is cool.
Comment #7 :: link :: August 11, 2004 03:47 PMAs much as I hate to pass up something free, I can't see my way to handing over my street addy to yet another (potentially) slimy marketer.
Comment #8 :: link :: August 11, 2004 03:58 PMWell, Jay is clucking his tongue at me, but I'm in. (I've put in for Powerball at the office, too--I'm such a lemming!)
Comment #9 :: link :: August 11, 2004 09:14 PMHey Mike -- do we have to use real names? I know I have to give a real address, but I am tempted to sign up as Ennis ...
Comment #10 :: link :: August 11, 2004 11:32 PMDone. Count me in too. Used my real name, with a minor adjustment so I can see how much junk mail this generates (not any more than my car loan does, I hope)
Comment #11 :: link :: August 11, 2004 11:39 PMOops, I haven't signed up yet--I thought we were waiting for the full compliment of victims. Are we still missing one person? I could me, Jimpy, andrea and Ennia. Shall I solicit on my LJ?
Comment #12 :: link :: August 12, 2004 10:38 AMApparently, I’m considered to have done this, even though I only got to the part about giving them my street addy. Hack, or just a db mistake on their part?
Comment #13 :: link :: August 12, 2004 11:50 AMOkay, then I guess we have enough people. So I'll go sign up now.
Comment #14 :: link :: August 12, 2004 12:15 PM"a full compliment of victims"? Is that really you, emily?
OK, enough with the proofer's snark. Yes, go ahead and complete the offer, emily. Tk, don't worry about it, it just has you in as "pending". So far Ennis and Andrea are listed as having fulfilled their offers, but not yet Jimpy or emily. Also there are two emails I don't recognize. Erm, who are you margossanta and hstallings? Are you playing our little game here?
Comment #15 :: link :: August 12, 2004 12:52 PMThis is a bleeding nightmare. Nothing I can do will make the site work correctly. Margossanta is a crap address I started a while back during a secret santa. I had to use it because when I tried bradamant@hotmail.com, it mysteriously insisted that I already belonged to some of the sites that had offers. I managed to sign up for realplayer using the yahoo address, but can't find acknowledgment that I did so anywhere.
So now I have two incomplete accounts, one realplayer account that I have to remember to cancel, and no lunch hour left. I think I give up.
Comment #16 :: link :: August 12, 2004 12:55 PMFor understandable reasons, they're very wary of having one person signed up with two email accounts. You may have been blocked because of that. I'd suggest you get your fiance to sign up in your stead.
Comment #17 :: link :: August 12, 2004 01:24 PMBut how do they know I was the same person? The first time, it never got as far as entering my real name and address--for some reason it took me straight to the offers page, which petered out on me at least once. Damnedest website I've ever seen. It is possible that I managed to sign up once, because the realplayer offer is supposed to take a few days to take effect--but wouldn't there be some sort of "pending" info somewhere?
Comment #18 :: link :: August 12, 2004 02:27 PMEmily -- wipe your cookies or log in from a different computer.
Also, how do I get out of the real player thing, and when do I do it? I mean, right now it's only a $1 charge, but ...
Comment #19 :: link :: August 12, 2004 06:58 PMHey! Let's be a little more tactful before we tell my future wife to "wipe her cookies."
Man, if that's not a euphemism....
Comment #20 :: link :: August 12, 2004 11:49 PMChris:
You didn’t know this was her virtual bachelorette party, with Ennis playing the role of the sexy Sikh stripper?
Okay, somehow or other I ended up getting credit for Real Rhapsody, even though they never charged my CC, AFAIK. Whatever. I'm back in.
Comment #23 :: link :: August 16, 2004 10:58 AMWhat's the update, chief? Have you rolled the six-sided die? Can I cancel Rhapsody yet? Did I win? Did I? Did I?
Comment #24 :: link :: August 16, 2004 11:47 AMWe have four -- emily, NS, Jimpy, and andrea -- who have completed their offers. (I guess that means you can cancel Rhapsody.) So we just need one more player! Any takers?
Comment #25 :: link :: August 16, 2004 12:00 PMOkay, (as far as I know) I'm signed up. I already have an ipod, though, so you can draw amongst yourselves.
Cheerio!
Comment #26 :: link :: August 16, 2004 06:00 PMHey guys, if you want to sign and haven't yet you should look in finding a conga line. Check out http://www.geocities.com/podconga/ ! It is brand new, and has some great links to help you out picking which sponsor to use!

Comment #28 :: link :: September 19, 2004 08:58 AMBefore you all get too excited about this, as the official winner of this particular free iPod, I have yet to see it.
In fact, a month later, the Gratis Network claims to still be "waiting on the vendor." I see iPods littering stores everywhere, so my current suspicion is Gratis is a scam, but I guess I'll keep waiting - what's the harm, right?
Needless to say, I will happily inform this thread should an iPod actually show up. But don't feel the need to check in too often, if you know what I mean.
Comment #29 :: link :: September 20, 2004 11:52 AMIt seems too good to be true, but it really does work. You just have to be patient, as hard as that seems. My iPod took one month total to ship after my status went to 'waiting on vendor'. My flatscreen however, shipped after only 11 days. Probably has to do with how much is in stock (those iPods are popular!)

Comment #36 :: link :: October 4, 2004 08:17 AMDear Diary: October 4th and still no iPod.
Until I see one (either mine or one that I see in the hands of a flesh-and-blood friend, as opposed to a link to a bit of "proof" posted somewhere on the Internet), I will continue to assure people that this smells, looks, walks and talks like a scam.
I will, of course, happily recant should mine show up. But it has been months, and we are still "waiting on the vendor."
Lies, lies, lies . . . , but by all means, try to get a flat screen TV while you are at it!
Comment #37 :: link :: October 4, 2004 10:12 AMThis stuff is real, do a quick google search and it will pull up literally hundreds of success stories (with pictures!). These "free" sites, if you will, are run by a company called Gratis Internet (www.gratisinternet.com), a professional and legit marketing firm. They do 3 other offers besides iPods and I recommend checking them out:

Comment #38 :: link :: October 11, 2004 01:11 AMDear Diary -
October 11th, and still "waiting on Vendor." So far, nothing about my experience matches anything posted in the "success stories" posted on the web. Most notably, the time I have spent in "waiting" limbo far exceeds any of the other stories.
Since many people on this board know that I am a real person, and since no one on this board actually knows any real people who have gotten ipods, I continue to suspect that the "success stories" fall into one of two categories:
1. People very high on the scam tree (any good pyramid scam pays off its first few people to give the scam momentum); or
2. Fake success stories (not hard to post a bunch of pictures on the web under different names - all you need is one ipod and any number of crude signs reading "my ipod").
Of course, should I ever get an ipod, I promise to post a picture. I even promise to make a crude sign saying "my ipod" or something equally compelling. If nothing else, I hope that encourages the scammers to send me one so that I can be part of their insidious plot.
For those of you who are counting, we have now been "waiting on the vendor" for over seven weeks after the offer was noted as "complete."
Comment #39 :: link :: October 11, 2004 10:53 AMObviously, you need to eat roaches if you really want a free iPod...
Comment #40 :: link :: October 12, 2004 10:58 AMFurther update. Not only does Jimpy not have an iPod, but my credit card number is in the hands of the unscrupulous and/or stupid people at RealRhapsody, who had been charging merrily away no matter how many times I try to cancel the account. There's nothing I enjoy more during the last few weeks before my wedding than spending all morning on the phone with their non-English speaking customer service reps and the only marginally more helpful people at my credit card company. I'm honestly considering just cancelling the card, except that everything I have that auto-charges has this CC# and I'm not really inclined to set all that stuff back up in the few days remaining before we jet off to Italy.
Comment #41 :: link :: October 15, 2004 12:58 PMive gotten tricked dion it and its all a trick im tired of doin the cancelation scheme and all i want is an ipod... Please get me one! my sons birthday is commin up and i really dont want to speand $300 on the thing....
