The thing to do now is smuggle in Coca-Cola from Mexico. But Atlanta ain't happy about that. Grant's take:
TCCC is acting like administrators of the Roman empire who have discovered that they must now contend with a small group of enthusiasts in Gaul who worship Rome and Romanness with new intensity. The Roman decision: put them down! Because the passion of the zealot is dangerous even if it happens, for the moment, to run in your direction. It's the principle of the thing. "We don't want your zeal," says the administrator, "we just want your obedience."
And, lest we forget, don't let ECHELON overhear you bragging that you "just scored some Mexican Coke."
the link to the blog does not do the WSJ article justice. The reason people like the mex-coke better is because a) it is made with cane sugar not corn-syrup; and b) it's in glass bottles not plastic. Maybe some nostalgia at work here, but these are real differences.
PS. Can anyone get me this article electronically? I only have the hard copy and I want to send it my family in Texas.

pps. Lots of people hate corn-syrup sweetner and many afficianados say it was the downfall of coke in the 80s.
I've heard that, during Passover, you can get special bottles of Coke that are sweetened with cane sugar, not corn syrup, and therefore are kosher for Passover. I think they have a different-colored bottle cap (and they would have to have the kosher for Passover symbol somewhere, too -- a P, I think). I'm presuming these are only available in certain parts of the country. No glass bottle, though.
Comment #3 :: link :: January 12, 2006 8:36 PMWouldn't the rising bubbles of any carbonated drink make it trafe for Passover?

Scroll down to the 3rd to last paragraph.
Comment #5 :: link :: January 13, 2006 8:24 PMGetting back to the power of a brand, this reminded me of one of my favorite "small" movies of the 1980's, The Coca-Cola Kid.
A great/fun movie, in spite of the fact that it starred Julia Roberts' even crazier brother.
Comment #6 :: link :: January 16, 2006 4:05 PMI sort of remember that movie -- is there a clutch of Santa Clauses dancing to "Waltzing Matilda"? The main reason I remember it is because we rented it while visiting my grandma (this was many many years ago) and there's some NSFG nude scene in there and my sister and I nearly died of embarrassment.
