He said that to his face?

He was phenomenal.
I was channel surfing after the Met game Saturday night and noticed that Colbert would be speaking at the correspondants dinner, so I stayed up and watched. I like him, and I was rooting for him to do well and for the audience to like him, too. He had some great lines, but most went over like, well, the Hindenberg (actually, his Hindenberg line got one of his better responses). And his video at the end was too long and not funny. I went to bed and told Liz that he bombed.
But looking at it again, it seems that his goal was not to be funny, but to make a point, and make it well. The point he made is the point of his show: that the press is gutless, and the Emperor has no clothes. He did that, at the expense of his audience, brilliantly.
