Josh Levin hates on Zach Braff:
Braff also uses pop songs as a cheat, an easy way to heighten the emotional impact of otherwise unremarkable moments. The music in Garden State is so load-bearing that the movie becomes ridiculous if you swap in different tunes—if you don't believe me, check this out. [Link]
Question - if the scenes don't work without the sound track, that might not be good, but is it bad? I mean, isn't that what the sound track is for - to set the mood?

Absolutely. I mean, what would "Sound of Music" performed by The Archies be like?
It might be a fair criticism that Garden State relies too heavily on the emotional content of the music, but to suggest any work could survive Nelly is unfair.

Comment #2 :: link :: September 26, 2006 11:47 AMThe only thing more boring than the pervasiveness of the Garden State soundtrack is the backlash against Zach Braff. I'll gladly listen to the Shins and Coldplay for the umpteenth time rather than read some hipster whine about too many yuppies liking bands he secretly used to love.
