Um, is there another way to make your blog popular other than through your content? See my comments there for more discussion.
It doesn't sound to me like he heard the "duh" in your comment. And, having surfed a lot of blogs through some of the exchange sites (blog explosion, etc) it seems to me that this "duh" advice might not be as duh as we might first assume.

For the rest of us, content is the obvious key.
