The Conversation : Dirty Mind :: The Godfather : Purple Rain
Mess With Your Mind: Prince Spends The '80s Confounding Rock Critics, Tipper Gore - Idolator

For the record, my analogy is a total cheat, because The Conversation (1974) came after The Godfather (1972), while Dirty Mind (1980) long preceded Purple Rain (1984).
That's why I grouped together the two Godfathers – Part II came out in late '74, after The Conversation – when making the Purple analogy. But it's still a cheat.
Mostly I needed a way to tee off the Apocalypse Now : Sign 'O' the Times analogy.

Comment #2 :: link :: August 23, 2007 11:15 AMIf we perceive Peggy Sue Got Married as Coppola's "one decade past his prime, flawed but still quite respectable" opus, for Prince that's Diamonds and Pearls.
And Jack? That'd be The Rainbow Children, Prince's Jehovah's Witness album. Seriously, don't go there.
