Does anyone know why almost half of the Democrats voted to continue funding for the war? They were all on board with Webb's amendment the day before (which would cause a drawdown in troop levels by mandating longer times between Iraq tours for soldiers). I can't figure it out.
Jon Stewart asked the same question last night, when he asked, "When did the Democrats become Lionel Hutz?" At which point he played a clip from The Simpsons where Hutz was at Homer Simpson's door:
Hutz: My fee is $175 an hour.
Homer: We pay $8 a night and you can take 2 popsicles out of the freezer.
Hutz: 3.
Homer: 2.
Hutz: Okay 2. But I get to keep this old birdcage.
Homer: Done.
Hutz: (adjusting his tie) I still got it!
The answer, I'm sad to say, is that the difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Republicans act decisively and don't care one bit about public opinion. Democrats, on the other hand, are paralyzed not by public opinion but rather what Republicans convince them public opinion will be if they act.
And then the Democrats back a resolution condemning Moveon.org. Pitiful. It's hard to support the Democrats when they have no spine. Oh, did I also mention lack of solid vertebrae?
