Making Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong and Me is a blog post by the guy who programmed Donkey Kong. For the Atari 800. Some insight there as to why the company tanked, and on the importance of decent comments in your code.

Zach is currently obsessed with Super Mario Galaxy which he plays at the local video game store (but just once a week, we've had to ration him). I wonder what he'd make of Atari Mario?

1. We own Super Mario Galaxy for Wii. If you want to bring Zach over to play for longer than a store-based session, let us know!

2. The first five game cartridges I owned for my Atari 400 computer, all purchased in 1982–83, were Pac-Man, Centipede, Defender, Dig Dug and Donkey Kong, in that order. And Donkey Kong was probably truest "port" of all of them. I totally believe him when he says he used every last bit of that 16K; it was a remarkable recreation of the arcade play. (Oh, and he's right about the bozo who shared an office with him; the Dig Dug port was awful. Like, Pac-Man-on-the-2600 awful.)
